I consider the security of gas stations a matter of National Security/Defense and would promise to sign a National Security Directive compelling all service station owners in all 50 states to hire gas attendants or close shop. This is the law in Oregon and New Jersey and by all accounts is well received in those states.
My first job, at age 15, was at a Standard Gas Station as a pump attendant. I wore the designated uniform and cleaned windshields as I dispensed fuel into people's cars. That was the way we did things back in 1954 in California. Gas cost about 25 cents a gallon back then and we pumped a lot of gas.
Standard Stations were a division of Chevron Oil at the time. We only did gas and oil services. If you wanted more extensive service, like changing tires or mechanics work, you drove a short distance to a Chevron Dealer. They did it all!
I was content as a teenager getting minimum wage to pump gas and, because I was courteous and efficient, I often got small tips from the driver . . . which were always appreciated but never expected.
Later in life I owned Paia Chevron on Maui, I have the experience to recommend the gas attendant idea as a way to instantly improve the profitability of service stations by increasing turnover at the pumps and sales of "convenience store" items, which could be easily stocked with basic "necessities" because the customers have a bit more time to shop while the gas is being pumped.
TODAY the price of gas is approaching $4.00 even after most every gas station around the country cut millions of jobs over the years to become “Self Serve”. The answer to rising gas prices has little to do with whether you pump or an attendant, like me 50 years ago, pumps. The price of gas is going higher and higher because we have used a lot of the world’s supply during that half century. Nowadays most all the oil to refine the gas is drilled in very tough places on the other side of the world or way out in the ocean.
TODAY the USA is not the only place where gas is needed. The entire developing world wants to be just like the US and have their cars and trucks and they will pay a lot to get the remaining gas in the Earth. Due to this rise in global demand the price of gas will continue to climb whether we like it or not here in the USA. The price of future gas will not be affected at all by whether we “self serve” or have an attendant.
TODAY we have enemies, who we call “Terrorists” who would like to disrupt the workings of America. They will do anything to put fear into our minds about stuff so they can bring down America. This is nothing new but now it is coming home to haunt us because their next target will be to disrupt the gasoline supply across our land and that could be a death blow to our nation. Soooooo . . .
LETS PUMP UP AMERICA AND CREATE JOBS AT THE SAME TIME
TODAY security of gas stations is a matter of National Security. As to the matter of National Security, it is already being floated by "Homeland Security Committee Chairman" Republican, Peter King, that Al-Qaida has switched to recruiting from within U. S. borders. In an interview with Newsmax.com Young said “They’re taking people who are under the radar screen who are not on any terrorist surveillance list at all and they are recruiting them to fight against America,” See complete story at:

If I were such a terrorist the first targets I would choose would be gasoline filling stations . . . minimum loss of life - maximum fear tactic and economic disruption. My case for creating over a million jobs immediately in the private sector spread all across America with the stroke of the pen via National Security and Homeland Security Directives is not new!
I blogged about it a year ago. Since then terrorism around the world and in America has gone from bad to worse. And “worser” still is that the only solution many have chosen is to cut spending in both public and private sectors. Downsizing our country via budget cuts is not the answer to reviving the USA!
JOBS. JOBS. JOBS ARE THE ANSWER because every new job, no matter how small it may appear at first, gives folks money to spend and reduces the cost of unemployment, medical cost and homelessness for all of us.
Therefore: in my campaign for President of these United States.
JOB CREATION IS JOB ONE!
Cost cutting ALONE will not balance the US budget crisis
